Ultimate Guide (2025 Edition): Traveling Between Matsumoto and Kamikochi by Bus
Kamikochi is one of the most beautiful places in Japan, known for its clear rivers, mountain views, and peaceful hiking trails. But getting there can be a little confusing—especially if it’s your first time.
This guide explains how to get to Kamikochi from Matsumoto. Please read carefully before your trip!
Things to know before going to Kamikochi
- Private cars and rental cars are not allowed in Kamikochi. All visitors must transfer to a bus at a Sawando or Hirayu.
- Kamikochi is only open from April 17 to November 15 each year. Outside of this period, all hotels, shops, and buses into Kamikochi are closed.
- From 2025, all seats on the bus between Shin-Shimashima / Matsumoto and Kamikochi require reservations.
How to Get from Matsumoto to Kamikochi
There are two ways to reach Kamikochi from Matsumoto:
Option 1: Take the Direct Bus (National Park Liner)
Option 2: Take the Train and Bus via Shin-Shimashima
Option 1: Direct Bus (National Park Liner)
You can take a direct bus from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi. This is the easiest and most comfortable way.
- This direct bus is called National Park Liner, departing from Matsumoto Bus Terminal and goes directly to Kamikochi.
- There are only two buses per day, departing at 5:30 AM and 10:15 AM.
- The ticket sell out quickly, especially the 5:30 bus. So please reserve your ticket online in advance.
- Reservations open one month in advance. For example, tickets for May 15 will be available from April 15.
- The new bus timetables are usually posted in late March each year. If reservations are not yet available, please check again after the updated schedule has been released.
Option 2: Train + Bus via Shin-Shimashima Station
If the direct bus is full or doesn’t fit your schedule, you can take a train and then transfer to a bus.
Step 1: Train from Matsumoto Station to Shin-Shimashima Station
Please buy a train ticket (710 yen) at the vending machines inside JR Matsumoto Station and take the Kamikochi Line (aka Matsumoto Dentetsu line) train from Platform 7. Enjoy Japan’s countryside scenery on the 30 minutes train ride and get off at the final station, Shin-Shimashima.
This is not a JR train, so:
- JR Pass is not valid
- IC cards (like Suica or PASMO) are not accepted
- Credit cards are not accepted (Cash only)
All seats are non-reserved. You can always get a seat. Tickets are valid only on the day of purchase, so buy it on the day you ride.
Kamikochi Line trains usually come with 5 color stripes, sometimes with its mascot “Nagisa Endo” but also at times it comes in bright orange color.

Tips
Step 2: Take a Bus from Shin-Shimashima to Kamikochi
From Shin-Shimashima station, take a bus bound for Kamikochi. The ride takes about 1 hour, going through beautiful landscapes before reaching to Kamikochi.
- Reservations are required starting from 2025.
- If you don’t book in advance, you can still buy a ticket at Shin-Shimashima Station or Kamikochi Bus Terminal on the same day—but there are chances that the bus on your preferred departure time is full.
- Reservations open one month in advance. For example, tickets for May 15 will be available from April 15.

How to Get from Kamikochi to Matsumoto
There is no direct bus from Kamikochi back to Matsumoto. You’ll need to take a bus from Kamikochi to Shin-Shimashima, then take a train to Matsumoto.
- Unlike the outbound route, you can book both the return bus and train tickets together online. When you make the reservation, just select "Matsumoto Station" as your drop-off point, and it will include both the bus and the train.
- If you don’t book in advance, you can still buy a ticket at Matsumoto Bus Terminal or Kamikochi Bus Terminal on the same day—but there are chances that the bus on your preferred departure time is full.
- Reservations open one month in advance. For example, tickets for May 15 will be available from April 15.

Ticket Cancellations and Changes
- If you booked your ticket online, you can cancel it through the “Manage My Booking” page on the Japan Bus Online website. However, you cannot make changes to your departure time, passenger name, or other details. If something changes, you’ll need to cancel and make a new reservation. (Cancellation Fee: 100 yen)
- If you bought your ticket at a ticket counter (at Matsumoto Bus Terminal, Shin-Shimashima Station, or Kamikochi Bus Terminal), go back to any of those locations to cancel or make changes.
Frequently asked questions
- Q: Can I get off at Taisho Pond and continue later to Kamikochi Terminal?

Yes, but only if you’ve already purchased a return ticket (Kamikochi → Shin-Shimashima or Matsumoto). Just show your ticket to the driver when you reboard—either on your phone (e-ticket) or the paper ticket.
If you don’t have a return ticket, please pay 450 yen to the driver when boarding (cash only).
- Q: Are there any bus passes available?

Sales of all discounted bus passes, including the “4-Day Alps WIDE Free Passport,” “2-Day Free Passport,” and “Alps Crossing Ticket,” have been suspended. There is currently no plan to resume sale.
- Q: What happens if I miss my bus? Can I take the next one?

No, you cannot. All buses require a reservation. If you miss your bus, please go to the nearest ticket counter for assistance:
Kamikochi Bus Terminal, Shin-Shimashima Station, or Matsumoto Bus Terminal.
- Q: Can I put my luggage on the bus?

Yes, you can. Large luggage can be stored in the trunk compartment under the bus. There are no restrictions on size or quantity.
- Q: Is there a round-trip discount?

No, there are no round-trip discount fares.
- Q: I can’t log into the “Manage My Booking” page. What should I do?

Make sure you’re using the same email address you used when booking, along with your booking number from the confirmation email.
If you’re still having trouble, contact JapanBusOnline website using their Contact Form.
Note: Alpico does not manage the booking website.
- Q: I want to cancel my booking but don’t know my booking number.

Check the confirmation email you received at the time of booking—your booking number will be there. If you didn’t receive an email, the booking likely didn’t go through. You can inquire with JapanBusOnline, using their Contact Form.
- Q: I booked the ticket online. How do I board the bus?

There are two types of online tickets:
1. E-Ticket / Confirmation email (Recommended):
- After completing your payment, you will receive an email titled "E-ticket from JapanBusOnline".
- This email itself serves as your E-Ticket (no attachments).
- Show the printed E-ticket (email) or display it on your mobile device to the bus driver before boarding.

2. Mobile Ticket:
- Go to the "Manage My Booking" page and enter your email address and reservation number.
- Your booking details will appear.
- Tap the blue "Display Mobile Ticket" button to show your mobile ticket with a QR code.
- Present your mobile ticket (QR code) to the bus driver before departure.
- However, if the "Display Mobile Ticket" button doesn’t appear, please use your confirmation email as your E-ticket to board the bus.
