ATTENTION PLEASE

  • From 2025, all buses between Matsumoto and Kamikochi require reservations for both outbound and return trips.
  • Two direct buses, National Park Liner, run from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi. However, there will be no direct buses for the return trip.
  • For non-direct buses, please reserve a seat only for the bus from Shin-Shimashima to Kamikochi. Please purchase a Kamikochi Line train ticket (not a JR train) from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima at the vending machines at Matsumoto Station. Payment is cash only—IC cards and credit cards cannot be used. Train seats are usually available, and reservations are not required.
  • If there are available seats, you may board without a reservation. Please buy the ticket at the ticket office where you board.
  • We cannot answer in advance whether a specific bus will be fully booked on the day of travel.
  • Please check seat availability on the reservation website. We do not respond to inquiries about available seats.
  • If you are traveling only between Sawando and Kamikochi, please use the Sawando – Kamikochi line bus.
  • There is no discount for round-trip tickets.
  • Alpico does not manage the reservation system. If you have the following issues, please contact JapanBusOnline.com directly by using this form.

To Kamikochi

  • The direct buses (National Park Liner) departs from Matsumoto Bus Terminal at 5:30 AM and 10:15 AM. These buses are usually fully booked, so please purchase your tickets online in advance.
  • For non-direct buses from Shin-Shimashima to Kamikochi, reservations can be made online in advance. Same-day tickets are also available at Shin-Shimashima Station, but buses may fill up quickly, so we recommend booking in advance.
  • Train tickets from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima cost 710 yen and can be purchased from vending machines at JR Matsumoto Station. Payment is cash only—IC cards and credit cards are not accepted.

  • When making an online reservation, if you select "Matsumoto Station" as your drop-off point, your ticket will include both the bus and train fare.

Troubles while making a reservation online
  • Alpico does not handle the operation of the reservation website. If you encounter issues like your card being denied, the reservation page loading slowly, not sure what to fill in the form, error occuring while proceeding, or being unable to proceed despite availability, etc., please reach out to JapanBusOnline.com, which is the company that manages the reservation website, directly at https://japanbusonline.com/en/contactus/contactform for help.
  • We often receive inquiries about card denials, but when we test it, it usually works fine. So, please try using other cards or attempt booking later the next day or contact your card issuer.
  • If you don’t see the bus you want to book on the booking website, it means that bus is full. Please choose another available bus.
  • The online reservation system and the ticket counter share the same seat availability. If online bookings show no available seats, the ticket counter will have the same status.
  • To check seat availability for the reserved bus, please visit the reservation page. If the bus is fully booked, you will see indicators such as “×”, “No Seat Available”, or “Not Available”. We will not answer to the inquiries about the seat availability.

Ticket Reservation
  • Please make a reservation by yourself. We do not accept reservation requests, regardless of the number of passengers or requests from travel agencies.
  • The online reservation system and the ticket counter share the same seat availability. If online bookings show no available seats, the ticket counter will have the same status.

Ticket Cancellation
  • If you reserved your ticket online:
    • Please cancel your reservation by yourself online from this page. Cancellations cannot be made at the ticket counter. Your reservation number can be found in the confirmation email.
    • Cancellation fee applies 100 yen per person.

  • If you reserved your ticket at the ticket window:
    • Please bring your paper ticket to the ticket window to cancel your reservation, at least 15 minutes before the departure time.
    • Available locations: Kamikochi Bus Terminal, Shin-Shimashima Station, and Matsumoto Bus Terminal.
    • Cancellation fee applies 100 yen per person.

Ticket Change
  • If you reserved your ticket online:
    • You cannot change your reservation information (time/date/name etc.). Please cancel and make a new reservation by yourself online from this page.
    • Cancellation fee applies 100 yen per person.

  • If you reserved your ticket at the ticket window:
    • Please bring your paper ticket to the ticket window to change your reservation before departure time.
    • Available locations: Kamikochi Bus Terminal, Shin-Shimashima Station, and Matsumoto Bus Terminal.

How to Board the Bus

There are two types of online tickets:

1. E-Ticket / Confirmation email (Recommended):

  • After completing your payment, you will receive an email titled "E-ticket from JapanBusOnline".
  • This email itself serves as your E-Ticket (no attachments).
  • Show the printed E-ticket (email) or display it on your mobile device to the bus driver before boarding.
If you have not received a confirmation email, please check you spam or trash folder. If you still cannot find the E-ticket/confirmation email, please contact Japan Bus Online directly through their inquiry form.

2. Mobile Ticket:

  • Go to the "Manage My Booking" page and enter your email address and reservation number.
  • Your booking details will appear.
  • Tap the blue "Display Mobile Ticket" button to show your mobile ticket with a QR code.
  • Present your mobile ticket (QR code) to the bus driver before departure.
  • However, if the "Display Mobile Ticket" button doesn’t appear, please use your confirmation email as your E-ticket to board the bus.

Train & Bus Transfer
  • If you are traveling to Matsumoto by train and transferring to Kamikochi, you do not need to exit through the ticket gates. Simply proceed to platform 7 and board the Kamikochi Line train. Show your Matsumoto Station–Kamikochi web ticket to the staff at Shin-Shimashima Station.

    HOWEVER, if you are using an IC card (such as SUICA), please exit the ticket gate at Matsumoto Station, purchase a Kamikochi Line train ticket, and re-enter through the ticket gate.

  • We typically update this timetable in late March.
  • If the schedule for next seasson is not yet available, please be patient for its release. We kindly ask that you refrain from inquiring about the release of the new timetable, as we cannot provide more details than what is available on the timetable page.
  • The timetable is not expected to change significantly from last year, so please refer to the timetable from the previous year until the updated one becomes available.

Luggage Allowance
  • This bus has a luggage compartment where you can stow your suitcases. There are no restrictions on the number or size of items.
  • Items such as ice axes, poles, pickaxes can potentially damage other passengers’ luggage. Please store them inside your backpack or carry them separately in a dedicated cover or bag.
  • Bicycles can be stored in the trunk and should be disassembled and packed in a dedicated bag for assembly-type bicycles or in a specific bag for folding bicycles. (Bicycles that cannot be disassembled or folded are not allowed on board.)
  • Loading and unloading of luggage is your responsibility.

Onboard Facilities
  • This bus does not have a restroom onboard.
  • This bus is not equipped with a wheelchair lift or designated wheelchair space, so it cannot accommodate passengers who wish to remain in their wheelchair during the journey. Please fold your wheelchair and store it in the bus's luggage compartment. Kindly note that unfolded wheelchairs cannot be accepted.

Getting to Kamikochi in Winter (Nov 16 - Apr 16)

There is no bus service to Kamikochi from November 16 until April 16, and we do not provide tours to Kamikochi.

About the bus to Kamikochi

  • The nearest bus stop to Kamikochi in winter is the K-26 Nakanoyu bus stop. To reach Nakanoyu bus stop, you can board the Matsumoto - Takayama bus. An advance reservation is required. Please check the fares from the timetable page.
  • From Nakanoyu bus stop, you will need to walk or use snowshoes, approximately 1 hour (3 km) to Taisho Pond and about 2 hours (7 km) to Kappa Bridge. The time required may be significantly longer depending on the snow conditions and weather.

For those who plan to enter Kamikochi during this period

  • Please be aware that winter mountain climbing/snowshoeing is undertaken at your own risk. Kamikochi experiences rapidly changing winter weather conditions, with potential dangers such as avalanches, falling rocks, and ground blizzards.
  • When entering, you must complete a climbing registration at the entrance (Nakanoyu Gate) and submit it in the designated box. We highly recommend you join a tour with a professional guide when going to Kamikochi in winter. One of our recommended guides is Raicho Guesthouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I have booked a ticket for the bus departing at XX:XX. Can I take an earlier or later bus if there are available seats?

Answer: No, even if there are available seats, you must take the bus you reserved. If you need to change your departure time or travel date, please cancel your current reservation and book a new one online.


Question: Can get off at Taisho Pond bus stop, then use the same ticket to board a bus from Taisho Pond to Kamikochi Bus Terminal?

Answer: Yes, but only if you have a return bus ticket from Kamikochi to Shin-Shimashima or Matsumoto. Please show your return bus ticket to the driver when boarding at Taisho Pond bus stop.

Children’s fares
  • 13 years and older: Adult fare
  • 6 to 12 years old: Child fare (You can check the exact fare at the time of booking.)
  • Under 6 years old: No reservation is needed if the child does not occupy a seat.

However, children under 6 still count as passengers. If the bus reaches full capacity, they may not be allowed to board unless they have a ticket. To ensure a seat and avoid any issues, we recommend purchasing a child fare ticket, even if the child will sit on a parent’s lap. This option is also safer and more comfortable for the child.
